Only 4 years after the first battery operated smoke detector was developed by Duane Pearsall and Stanley Peterson, a company called Fire Fight was established in the small suburb of Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa by Margerett and Robert Macfarlane.
Two years later, these founders decided to focus on manufacturing their own fire equipment but understood the need in South Africa for integration and installation of these products, so the company was split in two and in 1971, Fire Fight became Ziton and Lintek.
Integration / Installation
Ziton branched into manufacturing its own products whilst Lintek focused on the integration and installation in the fire detection and suppression market. Lintek only had 5 employees at that time.
There was no legislation to support fire detection in South Africa however Lintek was one of very few specialists in the Western Cape.
Health & Education
In the 80’s, Linktek was renamed to FireSpec and continued with its focus on the fire market, but also diversified into other aspects of enterprise security, including access control, surveillance and voice evacuation.
Big fire projects were undertaken at major hospitals such as Groote Schuur, Caledon, George, Somerset and Tygerberg Hospital.
The first tender was also won in Higher Education with the University of Cape Town, which became a flagship client for FireSpec.
Fire Spec Systems shared their new look by launching a brand new logo and tagline, changing the colour to green and grey. The new tagline read: "specialists in safeguarding people and property".
In 2010 FireSpec Systems was renamed to FS-Systems and the tagline changed to 'Your Trusted Fire & Electronic Security Partner".
The company has PSIRA, SAQCC and FDIA accreditations.
The first International Project for FS Systems was in Ghana, 2012.
FS International started trading in 2016, the same year Broadreach Private Equity, in partnership with Grindrod Financial Services, has entered into an agreement to acquire an equity stake in FS-Systems. FS Systems added Abloy products.
FS Systems grew to over 80 employees.
FS Ghana was established in 2018, another addition of the FS Group.
