FS Systems at HEFMA 2026: Exploring the Maturity of Facilities Management in Higher Education

What does it take to manage a higher education campus that is safe, efficient and ready for the future?

This question was at the centre of the 2026 HEFMA Conference, held in Gaborone, Botswana, from 12 to 15 October. Under the theme “Maturity of Facilities Management in Higher Education,” the conference brought attention to the role facilities management plays in supporting the spaces where people learn, work and connect.

Growing towards a more proactive approach

Higher education institutions manage diverse environments, from lecture halls and libraries to residences, offices and specialised facilities. Each space has its own needs, while the campus as a whole must continue to support the people who use it every day.

As campuses evolve, facilities management must evolve with them. The conference theme encouraged a closer look at how institutions can move beyond responding to immediate maintenance needs and develop a more structured, proactive approach to managing their facilities.

Bringing fire compliance into the conversation

Bringing this theme into focus, Dorian’s presentation, delivered alongside Tarryn Fortune from Gallagher Security, explored how fire compliance reflects the maturity of an institution’s facilities management. Under the title “Your Panel Is Healthy. Is Your Campus Compliant?”, the presentation encouraged delegates to look beyond a fault-free fire panel and consider the wider system, from documentation and clear responsibilities to equipment lifespan and planned upgrades. The message connected closely with the conference theme: a mature approach means understanding the risks across your campus, planning ahead and verifying that completed work delivers the intended protection.

Sharing knowledge and strengthening partnerships

Attending HEFMA 2026 gave our team the opportunity to be part of a conversation about the future of higher education facilities and the responsibilities that come with managing these environments.

As higher education institutions continue to grow and change, FS Systems remains committed to helping them protect their people and assets through technology.
