At Kaapzicht Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, FS Systems was tasked with designing and implementing a solution that could address multiple risks within a historic wine cellar. From fire and intrusion to the environmental conditions essential for wine preservation, each requirement needed to be considered as part of a coordinated protection strategy.
Working with Ajax Systems technology, FS Systems delivered an integrated solution that combines fire detection, security, surveillance and environmental monitoring, with minimal impact on the building's historic interior.
The Challenge

Kaapzicht's wine collection faced three distinct threats: fire, intrusion and changes in environmental conditions.
A fire or security breach could cause immediate and irreversible losses, while fluctuations in temperature, humidity and CO₂ levels could gradually compromise the quality of the wine.
The historic cellar presented an additional challenge. Extensive cabling, drilling or structural alterations could damage the building's original features.
FS Systems needed to develop a solution that would provide comprehensive protection, remote visibility and early warning capabilities, without compromising the environment it was designed to protect.

FS Systems designed and specified a comprehensive solution using Ajax technology, bringing fire detection, intrusion protection, video surveillance and environmental monitoring together within a single integrated system.
The wireless architecture was particularly suited to the historic cellar, minimising the need for invasive installation work while allowing multiple technologies to operate together. The solution incorporates:
Fire detection and early warning
An EN54-certified fire detection system provides early identification of fire risks and audible and visual alerts throughout the facility.
Intrusion protection
Motion detection with photographic verification enables faster assessment of security events.
Video surveillance
Cameras provide live and recorded footage, accessible remotely for greater visibility of the premises.
Environmental monitoring
Continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity and CO₂ levels helps maintain suitable wine storage conditions, with notifications when readings fall outside defined parameters.
Intelligent automation: Connected devices enable coordinated responses, including automatically activating emergency lighting and providing visual verification when alarms are triggered.
